Stop spinning external hard disk

Hi.

Is it possible stop spinning an external hard disk by mean a plugin or command?

It could be a good option in order to improve the lifetime of external hard disks, when they are used as a recording directory. There is no need to spin for the HD when VDR do not use it. When VDR needs read from de disk again, spinning should be restored too.

I am asking for USB hard disks.

I was wondering if vdr of yavdr is able to do it because the vdr I have working in my "Siemens M740 AV" has a setup parameter to do it. So, in "x" minutes without working, the hard disk stop spinning, and when something is needed again from disk, it start working again.

With it, less noise is achieved, because in 3,5" external HD, the noise is off when it is not working.

Thanks, I think that is a good solution. I guess that vdr is not able to manage hd-idle or something similar and it must be done directly by the user.

I do not know if this kind of controling external hard disk could be a proposal for implementing in the future.
