Trying to install in Arch

  • Hi first post sorry it is in english, I am from the Uk

Currently just moving from windows to linux and have settled on endeavour os

Have used smartdvb, dvbviewer etc for many years and know absolutely nothing about linux :|

Anyhow I went to the AUR and installed the driver for my TBS6903 here: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/tbsecp3-driver-git-dkms/

Then installed vdr from here: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vdr/

I then installed using the makepkg - si and systemctl start vdr.service

    ● vdr.service - Video Disk Recorder

Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/vdr.service; disabled; vendor pres>

Now I have not touched any configuration files nor any groups etc, I just wanted to get it up and running and have a play around with it (I assume you can scan from within the UI?)

If I go into plugins this is what is available:

    libvdr-devstatus.so.2.4.7 libvdr-skincurses.so.2.4.7

    libvdr-epgtableid0.so.2.4.7 libvdr-status.so.2.4.7

    libvdr-pictures.so.2.4.7 libvdr-svdrpdemo.so.2.4.7

Is this enough just to get it up and running?

Also if I navigate to localhost:6419 I eventually get this message:

My setup is a vbox with a 36 inch actuator using gotox, I take it that is compatible with this programme? also can we use temporary feeds with biss....

  • Hi,

    Welcome to VDR!

As described, you need an output Plugin. This depends on your hardware. You can use dedicated hardware, but this is obsolete nowadays. Now most use Nvidia graphics cards as they work best and with the least problems. You also can use newer Intel graphics devices in e. g. Intel NUC devices. But this is more tricky.

    They are vdr-plugins: Softhddevice softhdcuvid...

Most use pre configured distributions for VDR. The actual most active are yavdr ansible 0.7 and MLD.

Easyvdr v5 may also work, but we are not working on it much.

  • You can also install on arch an output Plugin, choose what you want and install it

  • For a GT 1030 either softhddevice or softhdcuvid - at least on Ubuntu 20.04 softhddevice is more reliable.

  • Actually for all "Arch based VDR stuff" everything is based around https://github.com/VDR4Arch/vdr4arch

Stuff is developed there and ocassionally synced to AUR. Packages are autobuilt using CI (TravisCI currently) so in theory you can use prebuilt packages.

Whenever you use any VDR output plugin you also need some way to autostart an X server together with VDR. Years ago the solution that was developed for this is "vdr-xorg" which also has to be installed if you want to use it.

I've just updated vdr-softhddevice. I usually don't monitor plugin updates closely and as usually noone notifies me, I don't see which updates are required.

AND: To be honest: Noone in the vdr4arch team tests VDR output plugins anymore. So if you find any issues, please tell me.

  • Hi I installed the softhdevice https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vdr-softhddevice/

Still the same output as before

  • Well after I saw your post i installed vdr-xorg and xlogin from the aur

now i cannot login to my pc, it just returns me to the login page - I am typing this on my sons pc

no biggie, all of my data is on a separate ssd i will have to reflash endeavour os

  • How do you use this PC? If you have a regular desktop on there, then I would not use any VDR output at all and would prefer to have some IP level separation between VDR backend and actual playback frontend.

Probably all you need to do is Ctrl + Alt + F6, login as "root" there and disable vdr.service. Then reboot.

  • Yes it is arch gnome and what I was going to do was install kodi similar to tvheadend

Was thinking it was similar as I could play around with it in the web interface?

I would be watching tv on the same pc vdr is installed on

Trying the ctrl alt f6 i can login and issue the command 'systemctl disable vdr.service' but still unable to get past login screen

    Fun and games lol

  • Hi,

Vdr is normally the only service that is used on such PC.

You can use a dummy OSD provider and just use Kodi or the Live-Plugin (Webfrontend) to get the OSD.

  • Then what I would strongly suggest to you is to not install any "regular" VDR output plugin at all. There may be some workarounds to allow this for other distributions but not for Arch for sure! In regular desktop situations you want VDR as backend only and some kind of regular "desktop application" to display the actual picture.

The easiest "all in one" solution is to install the "vdr-vnsiserver" plugin instead of a "regular" output plugin. And get rid of "vdr-xorg" again. It will conflict with your desktop and is only meant for standalone dedicated HTPC installations without desktop.

If VDR starts well with this configuration, then install "kodi" and "kodi-addon-pvr-vdr-vnsi". All you then have to do is configure the PVR addon inside Kodi to connect to VDR on "localhost".

Actually webinterface would be possible with the "live" plugin installed into VDR (and enabled, of course). But for streaming this also requires "vdr-streamdev-server" to be installed and enabled in VDR.

The first step would be to make the VDR service start up successfully. Then the rest should be just minor configuration issues.

  • Ok I am back I have just reflashed the pc

Sorry I should have explained my setup earlier I want to had vdr running on the machine I am using

It is connected to a 55 inch OLED tv, what I used to do in windows was have smartdvb or dvbviewer running in the corner of the the screen (or full screen) whilst I was browsing other stuff

My assumption was I could have it running and play around with it in the web interface

I am not stuck on Arch, I would use another distro if I had to the only reason I am using Arch is because I keep hearing snaps/flatpaks are evil :S

So I will start again from the beginning:

    Install: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vdr/ or should I install: https://github.com/VDR4Arch/vdr4arch

    Then install: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vdr-vnsiserver/

    Then report back

    [gary@pc conf.d]$ cd

    [gary@pc ~]$ systemctl start vdr.service

Although having an issue installing vdr-live - it needs 'tntnet' and 'cxxtools'

cxxtools fails to compile although I do not understand (not experienced enough) this because cxxtools is being used currently to build kodi

    Building CXX object build/xbmc/CMakeFiles/xbmc.dir/CueDocument.cpp.o

Lets see what happens once kodi is finished

  • Kodi is available directly from one of the stock Arch repos. That's what I use. So no real need to compile this.

And about "vdr4arch vs AUR". They are the same and it is up to you if you really want to compile everything on your own.

If you have a look at the changelog of any of these AUR packages, then you'll see that any upload to AUR is just a sync from vdr4arch.

  • Ok have got the vdr live running finally thanks for the help

Now I have my dish pointed currently at 19.2e, what is the best way to scan achannels and enter my positioner settings? gotox not usals

    Can I scan individual transponders?

I see there are plugins for scanning but how are they configured is there an interface?
