On the dreambox and a few other receivers, there is the possibility to get EPG-Data in xmltv format offered by Rytec .
As you can see from the forum offering support for the Rytec EPG , it not only offers EPG for various regions, but it also seems to be continuously maintained.
Considering that it would be great to also use the Rytec EPG on the VDR, I decided to open a thread in its support forum in order to ask about using that EPG on the VDR .
Here is the essential part of the reply:
We do not say no in advance, but we want to see the software before
we grant a permit (and disclose the whereabouts of the XMLTV files)
In fact, if you read the whole reply in the thread linked above, it seems that the main concern about granting permission to use their files is the bandwith. They want for example only one download per day...
Another point that is probably worth mentioning is that they also maintain a mapping between the channel ids in the xmltv files and the broadcasted channels. The broadcasted channels are not in VDR format; but I suppose that it should be possible to translate the format...
Since the EPG in conjunction with epgsearch is one of the main characteristics of the VDR, I hope that the Rytec EPG is going to be used also on the VDR. As the rytec EPG is in xmltv format, writing a grabber for the xmltv2vdr plugin in cooperation with the persons providing the Rytec files might be a good starting point.
