  • hello
l live in Melbourne Australia. I am having problem with my ubuntu-based system to do VDR recording and I cant figure it out. I hoping someone here can assist.
############ Here is what Im using:
    dmidecode -
    Base Board Information
    Manufacturer: ASUSTeK Computer INC.
    Product Name: M3N78-VM
    uname - Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-13-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 30 22:12:12 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lspci - 01:07.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7131/SAA7133/SAA7135 Video Broadcast Decoder (rev d0)
    VDR - 220 ubuntu SVDRP VideoDiskRecorder 1.6.0-2; Sat Aug 8 00:33:49 2009; UTF-8
############ end of what Im using:

I first installed unbutu 8 and VDR worked ok, except I had some problems which I thought were due to Pinnacle 310i tuner card (there was some reports i read of i2c problem, anyway I managed to work around it mostly although it did seem a bit flakey). But I was able to record some stuff using VDR and was also able to watch HDTV using vlc (channels.conf output from 'scan').

I upgraded to ubuntu 9 and thats where I noticed a problem trying to record with VDR. I can still watch HDTV using vlc no problem. I can also see the epg data in vdr or using vdradmin-am. The problem is when I try to record, setting a timer in VDR. vdr creates directory structure for the output files and the 001.vdr files and idx stuff but the 001.vdr file size is zero bytes!

I have tried using a different card, I have also tried using a different OS (debian 5). But I still see the same problem, and I cant record anything, but I can watch stuff live with vlc.

here is tail from syslog (i restarted vdr without deleting timer)

Would greatly appreciate any assistance in how i trace why vdr creates 0 byte files and wont record.

  • Hi,

I don`t see a "recond" in your logfile.
Please attach the part of the Logfile while VDR is trying to start recording.

    Gruss

    ERROR: video data stream broken

That's why the VDR is stopping the recording.
But I can't tell you what's the cause of the problem.

The channelname is "ONE HD" perhaps it has am incompatible format for your VDR (your version is not HD capable).

You may try it with a differen VDR-Version.
Hanno provides alternative packages for ubuntu.

    Gruss
    SHF

  • Video Data Stream Broken (short VDSB) is a failsafe check within VDR recordings. Whenever there is no received data for some time, VDR assumes a failure and does a restart.

Reason may be a loss of signal, an unsupported encryption, wrong channel settings, or hardware failures. Can you watch the channel using VDR for receiving? For example, using streamdev streaming or something like xineliboutput?

    Cheers,

    Udo

  • Thanks for replying. A very useful suggestion.
    I installed the streamdev-server plugin.
The mpeg stream is available remotely using vlc ie http://ubuntu:3000/TS/1
Switching between different channels using the SVDRP interface works too, after I changed the URL above accordingly. So vdr streaming and the tuner hardware seems to be working fine, but recording is still a problem. But this seems like progress, at least I know vdr has no problem with the hardware or the channels. The problem appears to be a specific issue with saving the mpeg stream to disk.
    Any further suggestions much appreciated.

  • I have tried some other tweaks, and I think the problem I am having is related to the channels.conf file Im using. I had generated it using scan tool:
    scan -o vdr /usr/share/dvb/dvb-t/au-Melbourne > channels.conf
It seems to work fine when using the streamdev-server, Below is the contents of the channels.conf though it did not work for recording, vdr seemed to have no problem getting the epg data and streaming

I thought that the reason Im not seeing all the channels in the w_scan output was due to the combination of version and frequencies in use. So I attempted to build a more recent version of w_scan:
    pwd
    /home/stephen/w_scan-20090808
    root@ubuntu:~/w_scan-20090808# ./configure
    ...
    ...
    checking for linux/dvb/frontend.h presence... yes
checking for linux/dvb/frontend.h usability (API v5.0 or higher)... yes
checking for linux/dvb/frontend.h usability (FE_CAN_2G_MODULATION)... no

Alas, it seems that the libc-dev headers that are required for the build are not compatible with those provided in ubuntu 9.04:
    dpkg --search /usr/include/linux/dvb/frontend.h
    linux-libc-dev: /usr/include/linux/dvb/frontend.h

I will try to modify the channels.conf file by hand to the format output by w_scan, and recognised by vdr...
    Any tips appreciated.

  • You can try to start VDR with "-D 0" Option. That will disable the "emergancy exit" feature.

If that doesn't work try Hannos packages.

I have recently heard about problems with the original ubuntu-packages.
I don't know any more what it exactly was and it may be fixed meanwhile, but an other version may worth a try.

    Gruss

  • thanks for your help i think this is solved. I have created entries for the remaining channels in the channels.conf file manually, with a little help from vdr.

It seems that vdr will discover correct values for NID,SID,TID if there is an existing entry with the correct freq and 'parameters' in the channels.conf. The fact that vdr can discover the correct data may explain why it was able to load the epg data for each channel and also why streamdev-server was able to produce usable streams I could watch. But the wrong channel data was obviously confusing vdr when it came to record a stream and causing it to exit. The 'duplicate' channels are visible using the lstc command on svdrp interface, and it seems the channel entries discovered by vdr can be used to regenerate the channels.conf, a sort of w_scan bootstrap.

So to work around not having the correct channels.conf data initially, I took the output from the lstc command on svdrp interface, where channels are displayed in the correct format, and updated the channels.conf file with them, removing the old entries along the way. After restarting vdr everything is working correctly and I can record again.

As to why this happened, I think w_scan provided in ubuntu may have changed at some point recently, as did the channel details from the local broadcasters. So when i tried to re-scan for the local channels I found that w_scan could not discover all the channels that the other older utilities found. Being new to vdr I just charged ahead thinking that because I could see epg data that everything was peachy. I could not understand why I couldnt record.

Anyway hopefully this info will save a bit of time for some other ubuntu(or debian)+vdr users

For the record this is the current status of my channels.conf for Melbourne metropolitan area:
