multicast TV-signals

  • Hello,

i just get VDR working. I defenitly wanted to multicast the signals over
    my local network at home.
Is there a possibility to multicast the data with VDR and do i have to install
a special plugin?? And what a kind of software shut i use to receive the multicast.
I have a little experience with vclan.
Please let me know because i can use some good tips about this.

    Cheers

  • Hi there,

is there also a English site that you know?
On the client side i wanted to use vlc in windows.
I hope there is a possibility to do the streaming-client
    in windows.
But i first have to install the streamdev-plugin.
I thought that i also saw a option in the menu named "Remote client"
but i can't find it anymore! Does anybody know where i can find it?
I already checked the menu many times and it's not there anymore.

    Hi maffioso,

I doubt that it's worth to look for an English translation of that page. The streaming server plugin does not seem to support IP-Multicast. From the given page I got the impression that it only supports data delivery through http-channels. That would duplicate network traffic if two clients receive the same channel.

I'm also interested in multicast to deliver radio stations or playback of a m3u-playlist to several clients in my flat.
The disadvantage of HTTP- (unicast) streaming is, beyond waste of bandwidth, that there's a different delay for each client. If you have several clients in a separate rooms it's rather annoying to listen to the same music with different delays.
I guess it's still the case with multicast streaming, but much less as there's only the receiving buffer that introduces the variation in playback delay.

There's a multicast plugin, which is just a demonstration and proof of concept. However it may give you an idea how to modify/amend the streaming server plugin.

  • Oke jol,

that's very good information. I installed the streamdev-server
and now i know what you mean with the delays. It's really annoying
and i pulls a lot of resources out of my CPU.
Is the mcast-plugin ready for multicasting a hole transponder-group?

    Cheers

  • Does anyone also knows where you have to configure
the mcast-plugin because i installed the plugin and i already
started the plugin with vdr: ./vdr -Pxineliboutput -Pmcast
everytime when i try to ask the configurations for this plugin
with setup-->plugin-->mcast then there appears a green message
    that says:no configuration setup initialized?
Anybody an idea what i can do about this. The readme-file are saying
    not much.
They say something about the /video/plugins/mcast file but i doesn't
work for me. Please some opinions?
    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers
