Debian erkennt nur 1GB RAM (6GB iinstallled)

  • Hi,

we just installed debian sarge r3 on a MAXDATA Platinum Server with Intel Board, Dual XEON and 6 GB RAM.

Everything went fine, debian is running with kernel 2.4.27-3-386 but top shows only 960GB RAM.

What must we do to have debian working with the installed 6GB RAM?

Is 960MB is the max Memory Limit in debian?

    regards for quick reply's

  • Hi frifaj,

you need to get a Kernel with Highmem support. There should be a message of the kernel at boottime that only 960mb are available.

But "top shows only 960GB RAM." i think you have enough memory for the next 50 years.

  • Thanks for reply.

We will run vmware on this system. so 1GB is not very much memory to run several virtual machines.

You don't know which debian kernel has highmem support or where i could find these info's? I found nearly no info's about memory support on the debian site or on google ...

you mean, we need to recompile our kernel by setting the option you mentionned?

hurggl...i'm not very used in recompiling the kernel....

I think if you want to use a Mashine like this, there will be no choice but to recompile a spezialized Kernel! The default-kernel ist just for starting on !every! Mashine but will never be so fast and stabel then a spezialised Kernel with all options for your Iron! The default-kernel dose not even support your second CPU I guess!

Get an actual Kernel at kernel.org and start from Scratch! Thats the best way to get all the power from your Maschine!

PS.: If you don't like to recompile a kernel, you could give me the Maschine an I give you another witch would work fine with the Defaultkernel (PIII 1GHz, 1GB Ram; etc...)! :lol2

  • Hi,

no, Standard 2.6.8 does not support Highmem.

Btw. here you could get a nice Howto fpor compiling a 2.6 Kernel for Debian (really easy!): LINK
