eHD and AC3 over Soundcard

  • Hi,

I am trying to get dolby digital working with my eHD through the sound card (intel-hda) and vdr and reelbox plugin. Analogue audio plays fine, but I don't get any ac3 out. ac3 worked fine out of my soundcard when I was previously using xine and vdr-xine(without my eHD).

Here is the output when I tune to a AC3 channel (BBC HD): -

    RestartAudio, audioOverHDMI_ = 0, digitalAudio_ = 1, audioOverHd = 0
    [reelbox] SetPlayModeOn()
    [reelbox] audioPlayerHd_->Start()
    video: synced early

Has anyone got any ideas what's wrong?

    Thanks,

    Morfsta

  • you are able to use dolbydigital direct from the eHD. MiniDin & direct from the card
Why will you test it through soundcard, i think that picture and sound won`t fit together if it works.

  • What I currently don't understand is why you try to redirect digital sound to your soundcard.
If you try to pick up a digital signal to feed that to an amplifier you could use the SPDIF-out of the HDe.
Please refer to http://www.vdr-wiki.de/wiki/in…/Reel-HDe#Steckerbelegung for the pinout.
Quite some users directly solder a SPDIF (coax) to their card and mount an RCA jack to their casings.

If you absolutely need digital sound on your soundcard (the reelbox-plugin afaik just redirects analog) you can use the "-a" switch to the VDR binary to redirect the digital audiostream to a program like ac3dec, which in turn feeds the signal to an alsa compatible soundcard.
Please refer to http://www.vdr-wiki.de/wiki/in…ystem_an_einer_Soundkarte for the neccesary steps, you can skip the parts concerning the firmware of FF-Cards.

Do you happen to have some more Information, or perhaps a Link to a "Howto", on this. I plan on ordering a eHD soon either this Tuesday (12.30.08), or more realistically by Monday (05.01.09). But, as I'm also dependent upon either an Optical or Coaxial S-P/DIF out to my External Decoder to my 7.1 Set. This is something that also interests me as well...

Have a look at the first link I posted, there you see the pinout of the breakout on the back of the HDe.
Just solder the middle pin of a RCA jack to the SPDIF-Pin (1), and the outer ring to Ground (6), that's it.

  • Actually I was thinking of how to (or more literally where to), solder a RCA Connector for a Coaxial S-P/DIF out.

I've seen this Mod somewhere but, the "Pictures" (for all I know it could have been on this site), were slightly less then vague on how to do this though...

  • Since I currently can't take out my HDe from my VDR I'd suggest you take a simple multimeter and find out which pin is which solder pad on the board, that's actually very easy.

If you don't know how to do that, no offense, you should better refrain from modding the card by yourself and find someone near you who has some experience in that field...

In any case you could also take a simple mini-DIN connector, clip out the unneccesary parts and solder a RCA jack to it, this way you don't even need to touch your card.

  • Hello together,
    Hi Thomas,

I think this might be wrong:

According to the pinout on vdr-wiki GND seems to be Pin 3 or 5.
    Can anybody confirm this?

    Thanks it advance!

This is correct, here again the text from the wiki:

    Zitat

    1: SPDIF, 3/5: GND, 6: Y (Y in YC-mode), 8: U (C), 9: V (CVBS)

  • I think if You looked more closely at that log (CTRL+ALT+F8?) you'd notice that BBC HD is in fact "Copyright Protected" (e.g. It looks like our 'ol friend HDCP has made it's first strike!)
Cause right now I can not get any Sound out of it PERIOD!

But, once I zero out the entry for Dpid1 (and set VDR not to not replace it again behind my back), lol I have the unprotected Analog NAR-iation Channel again.

If I reset the DD Pid (i.e. Dpid1 back to: 2328 ), I experience horrible stuttering. I swear it's like I don't even have the eHD installed. If left to long in this "state" my VDR-1.7.0-ext-62 WILL CRASH HARD!!

    There ain't no:
    stp vdr

    ....

    stt vdr

anymore my only hope is to

    init 6

    :(

So a better question to ask is can the eHD deal with a HDCP encoded Channel such as ~apparently~ the BBC HD?
I can only guess (for those who are bothered) ;) that this would be the same story over on the ORF HD or does there DD Audio actually work??
